Since 2011, improvements in mortality rates for men and women have stalled – both on average, and in the most and least deprived areas. There are stark and longstanding socioeconomic inequalities in mortality rates. These widened further in 2020 due to the pandemic.
At regional level, the difference in health life expectancy is largest in Scotland. The North East of England has the smallest difference in healthy life expectancy across the region but with a lower healthy life expectancy in general.
